Good one about ANNIE HALL and MOBY DICK! That really captures the point nicely. Compared to those two, however, I think LOLITA really expects (challenges?) its readers to pass through Humbert’s smokescreen in order to empathize with Dolores. (Telling detail: Humbert is the only character who ever refers to Dolores as Lolita. It is own little pet (or prisoner) name for her. Recall the novel’s famous first paragraph. This is why I no longer ever refer to Dolores as Lolita. It is not her name.) Good point about the lack of female protagonists who are allowed to be flawed. It seems like TV is somewhat ahead in this area. Somewhat.

So true. When I was in in high school, I was also yearning for an experience I could relate to as a woman, like you described. Our assignment was to pick one 20th century author and spend the better part of a year researching and reading as much from that author as we could before the final paper. So my teacher recommended Sylvia Freaking Plath. Needless to say, my junior year became depressing-as-f, as I learned that Sylvia was brilliant, and she was right, and then she then she was dead, finally succeeding at eliminating herself from a f-ed up world. She validated and elaborated on all of my female experiences and fledgling views and in the end, the answer was – there is no answer. There is no path. Submit and die a soul-death, or die a real one.
