“Stand and Deliver” has been used since 1988 in English, education, and other classrooms all around the United States to demonstrate how one person who is totally committed to an effort can overcome tremendous obstacles and achieve their goal. While a number of scenes are accurate in their depictions, the movie is a docudrama and as such takes certain liberties with the presentation of the “truth”. I do feel the movie supports my theory that one person can have an impact in student achievement. While Mr. Escalante needed the support of several team members, such as the principal and his math department faculty, he was the person that envisioned the goal and drove the team to success.

The general plot of this movie is simple. “Stand and Deliver” took place in an East Los Angeles suburb in California at Garfield High School. In the movie “Stand and Deliver,” Jaime Escalante is an employee at a computer company that decides to quit and go into teaching. After arriving at Garfield High School, he is faced with a situation that in his opinion needs to be resolved. A largely Hispanic group of high school students were barely graduating with a ninth grade education. Mr. Escalante began to develop a program that would prepare these kids to take and pass the AP Calculus test to obtain college credit, and give a sense of self-confidence.
