In light of the recent outbreaks of salmonella in the US, it is worth reviewing Food, Inc., the recent film exposé of the food industry. The documentary, directed by Robert Kenner, was first released to theaters in the US in 2009, and on DVD in 2010. Despite a failure to draw any sharp political conclusions, the film is a damning indictment of the inability of the profit system to provide safe and healthy food for the vast majority of the populace.

OOD, INC. is a documentary that explores how food is produced in our culture and the controversial role of big business in the food industry. It is divided into different sections presenting a different aspect of these issues. The movie’s thesis is that products grown locally and organically are better for you than those products mass-produced through advanced technology. The movie calls for better regulation of the food industry, including fast foods, but also encourages the production, distribution and consumption of organic and locally grown food products. Thus, it ends with a free market solution.
FOOD, INC. is not for the squeamish since it sometimes shows chickens and chicks killed and cows slaughtered. Also, it pays much attention to animal feces, especially in the beef section. The movie is somewhat politically correct. It never offers much of an opposing viewpoint or even mentions that tainted beef often is rendered safe with proper cooking. There are also at least five references to evolution. This strengthens the movie’s humanist worldview. FOOD, INC. is an eye-opening movie that will generate much discussion, but it merits extreme caution because of the problem areas just cited.

It shows cruel treatment of animals in factory farms, flagrant violation of workers’ rights and irresponsible attitude to environment, typical for this highly mechanized and totally commercialized process. The unanimous opinion, derived from interviews with investigating authors Eric Schlosser and Michael Pollan, oppressed and progressive farmers, food safety advocates and government representatives is that modern food industry, receiving huge profits, implements unethical, unsustainable and unsafe methods and technologies, consequently producing unhealthy food, which puts at risk human health and life. What is even more outrageous, while major corporations try to hide this fact from the general public, restricting access to their facilities and intimidating with litigation those who contradict their policies, governmental agencies seem to ignore claims, concerning apparent violations during all stages of the production cycle and, on the contrary, often pass laws in favour of big businesses.
One of the questions, which arise while watching the film, is why do we have such a dramatic state of things in this sphere today? Among the most evident explanations there is a lack of responsibility and conflict of interests of various professionals, who are involved in production, processing and control of quality of food. In this respect engineering profession is not an exception, since a great number of engineers participate in this process at all stages.
